KJCC Congregation Ohr HaYam

The Keys Jewish Community Center SISTERHOOD is the beating heart of Congregation Ohr HaYam. We are a supportive, hardworking, energetic, fun-loving, creative group of women who hold the KJCC deep within our hearts. All female members of the synagogue are automatically welcome members of the Sisterhood. We meet on the first Sunday morning of each month, always sharing a delicious breakfast together as we plan synagogue activities for the upcoming month. Much of our emphasis is about organizing exciting holiday meals & celebrations throughout the year for the benefit of our entire membership and guests. We also plan weekly Oneg Shabbat celebrations following Services each Friday evening. We strive to create a fun & meaningful environment for all members to enjoy their time spent at the KJCC.

There are many social aspects of belonging to the KJCC Sisterhood. Members may choose to participate in our monthly Book Club or learn to cook and bake some favorite Jewish Holiday foods & pastries. We have had workshops teaching us how to braid a beautiful Shabbat Challah, create the three-sided filled Hamantaschen for Purim and make Mandelbrot, the ultimate Yiddish cookie! 

Each year, we plan a communal Sisterhood-led Shabbat service for the entire congregation. It is very powerful to see a group of 15 -20 women up on the bimah, joyously celebrating Shabbat together. For the past 18 years, we have been holding a wonderful & meaningful Women’s Passover Seder at the KJCC. In past years, we have created lovely pottery pieces such as candle sticks, kiddush cups, chicken soup bowls, matzo plates, seder plates & Miriam cups to use during our Women’s Seder. At the Passover Seder, we raise funds for and awareness of organizations, both local & worldwide, that assist women & children in need. This is our opportunity to practice “Tikkun Olam”, the Repairing of the World. This is a very special event. Certainly, not one to be missed! At the end of our busy season, we treat ourselves by going out to lunch together at a local restaurant. This social Sisterhood Luncheon is a simple reminder to us all, that by being active in the KJCC Sisterhood, we are building lifelong friendships!
